BioImpact+
Promoting the coexistence between biodiversity and renewable energies
The acceleration of the energy transition demands an increasingly balanced integration between the development of renewable energy projects and nature conservation. It is precisely in this context that BioImpacte+, an initiative promoted by APREN – the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association, in partnership with Bioinsight and a group of public, private and academic entities.
The project seeks to demonstrate that renewable energy production and biodiversity protection are not incompatible goals. On the contrary, through the implementation of concrete ecological enhancement measures and the involvement of local communities, it is possible to generate lasting environmental, social, and economic benefits.
BioImpacte+ develops on-the-ground actions that promote biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration, protection of fauna and flora, and raising public awareness of the role of renewable energies in the energy transition.
Objectives
The project aims to:
- To promote the coexistence between renewable energy projects and biodiversity;
- Implement ecological enhancement solutions in territories with renewable infrastructure;
- Strengthen the protection of priority species and habitats;
- Involve landowners, agricultural producers, local communities, and other stakeholders;
- To produce technical knowledge and disseminate best practices that can be replicated in other territories.
Results
Throughout its various editions, BioImpact+ has produced concrete results on the ground, among which the following stand out:
- More than 190,000 native trees planted;
- 712 hectares intervened for ecological recovery and enhancement;
- 130 livestock protection dogs assigned to reduce conflicts between agricultural activity and large carnivores;
- Over 95% reduction in losses on livestock farms supported by the project since 2014;
- Development of actions for monitoring biodiversity and restoring natural habitats;
- Active involvement of local communities, landowners, researchers, and public entities.
Project editions
BioImpact+ has been developing through different territorial initiatives, adapted to the characteristics and challenges of each region.
BioImpact+ Monforte
The first edition of the project focused on the municipality of Monforte, promoting a series of actions to enhance biodiversity and raise awareness of the compatibility between nature conservation and renewable energy production.
